Hello everyone. Today I am starting my series on Medical Sciences beginning with optometry studies. I will be talking about Mr Richard Hom who holds a PhD in Bio medicine and is working as an Optometrist Director at Anthem. I am bringing you his career path and how he developed and grew his career in this particular industry.

It is known that medical sciences is the only domain where the students need to plan for it since the beginning of their career in order to be successful. Many professionals including Richard Hom focuses on planning their education, experiences and career development with extreme caution. It is advised by him to plan each step of your career in anticipation that each step would never be the last step. Medical science is a field where you must firstly decide whether you wish to start and practice in your own clinic or be a professional and work in a corporate environment like Richard did. Both these plans have equal pros and cons and depending on your interests and skills, you should decide on this and move forward. In either case, you should be prepared to experience changes in your industry and you can do that by achieving varied skills or education needed to excel in your near future. You should lookout for new and in demand skills which could help you to take your career to the next level.

Speaking of Mr. Richard, he opened 2 optometry offices of his own but then decided to switch to a corporate role for which he did a program in Marketing Management and invested his time in familiarizing himself with computer technologies along with optometry. Like every other young professionals, Mr. Richard also had a fear that he will not be successful in his new job despite having the necessary skill set. Psychologists call this the Imposer Syndrome. It is extremely normal to feel like this. Every successful professionals you see around yourself once started from scratch.

But it is extremely essential to figure out your technique to get over it. You have you learn more, work harder and exploit your skills in order to achieve success at your job. And this is just what Richard did. When I asked Richard about what did he do to stand out in his field, he told me that he went against popular opinion and planned for steady career transitions. He knew that promotion and significant pay increases were not possible by staying with a single employer. And so he pushed himself to expand each job’s breadth of responsibility even if it did not match his current job description. He worked more than what was asked for and that gave him a head start to get a new job and an increased pay and promotion along with it.

According to him there are a couple of things which young professionals should focus on in order to develop their career. First is to show your new employer that you are willing to work hard. You should work for more than one job right from the beginning of your career. Second is to start any kind of leadership and personal development courses which can groom you in management and which could help you raise the bar from your current job. And third is to judiciously volunteer for additional roles and responsibilities to widen the organization’s awareness to you. It is important to be known in your organization in order to get more important projects and a better reputation in your company.

So this was how Richard developed an extremely successful career in Optometry and you can follow his footsteps to achieve great heights in your career.
