How to get a Job Interview By Your Career Goal

Hello Everyone, welcome to my blog and today I am going to share several tips which you can use to get an interview for the job at your dream company. Amid so many tips and tricks available on Google these days, I am going to provide you a crisp set of things that you need to do which would be more than enough for you to land a job. So today i will help you boil things down to a short list of effective and proven job searching tips that’ll help you fine-tune your strategy so that you can have a more fruitful job searching experience.

To begin with, I would like to share with you what happens after you apply for a job and we will backtrack from there. When you apply for a job via an online application process of any company, it’s very likely that your resume will first be screened by an applicant tracking system or ATS and if your resume is worded such that it passes through the ATS filters only then your profile will be forwarded to the recruiters. Most likely the recruiter may or may not understand all of the nuances of that job for which you’re applying. And so, it is very important for you to update your resume and use keywords to match the resume with the job description to get through, first the applicant tracking systems and then the recruiters. To give you guys a very basic example, consider that if the job description contains “good listening and writing skills” and your resume has “good communication skills” then simply update your resume with those exact keywords. It goes without saying that you can do this only if your skills match the job. Do not make up stuff and put incorrect details on your resume. In conclusion, study the job description and any available information you have on the position. Make sure that you are mirroring the words and phrases on your resume with the job description and that you are showcasing your strengths in the areas that seem to be of paramount importance to this role.

The second thing you can do is not to limit yourself to Online applications. If you want to accelerate your job search process, DO NOT stop once you apply online for that position. Start finding and then connecting to people working at that company who can either provide a referral or are willing to guide or mentor you to be eligible for that particular role or company. In order to make this happen you can schedule informational interviews with would-be peers. Feel free to approach recruiters and ask a few questions. Get on the radar of the very people who might influence you getting an interview. By lining up with people on the inside of the companies at which you want to work, you will instantly set yourself apart. Decision makers interview people who are recommended or by way of a personal referral before they start sorting through the pile of resumes that come through the Applicant Tracking System.

The third tip is to always always submit a Cover Letter with your Job application. It is essential to add details in your Cover Letter which highlight your experience in detail, mention the skills and experience which you as a potential employee can bring to the company and add a personal touch for why you would be a good fit for the job. Make sure that you update your cover letter for EVERY JOB that you apply because that would show the recruiters that you are committed to this role, company and that you have done your homework. You can even use this cover letter as an email or a linkedin message when you are trying to reach the recruiter or someone from your network. The fourth tip is to never miss out on anything in the online job application. Usually, companies ask for a short writeup about why you are interested in the position, there might also be a field to upload additional documents and other details. These fields are often non mandatory to submit the application but if you take out time and fill up these fields with caution then it can increase your chances of getting shortlisted by the ATS system.

Last but not the least, keep your linkedIn up to date and detailed. Companies use LinkedIn as a validation for any candidate and a good linkedIn profile increases a point for you. Make sure that you set a professional photo as your profile picture, upload a cover photo which symbolizes your interests and personality and add all the details of your education, experiences and certification. It would only be more beneficial if you could get endorsements from your boss, colleagues or any connections.

Also, get on LinekdIn Premium. You will be able to see competitive insights for the job which you are applying for. This will help you judge if you are a good fit for the job or not. And most importantly, you can use InMails to directly connect with the job poster which will give you a way to directly land in their inbox.

So these were a few tips which you can follow to land an interview for your dream job. Of course, this is just the beginning. Check out how you can crack an interview in my next post.
